Operation Keep Cannon—Mission Accomplished!
Last year Cannon Air Force Base was recommended for closure by the Department of Defense. The people of eastern New Mexico vowed to fight for Cannon, which had been a part of the region for more than 50 years. Thousands of area residents wrote letters and posted “Operation Keep Cannon” signs in their yards and outside their businesses. A partial victory was obtained last August when Cannon Air Force Base was placed in enclave status. Would a new mission be found for Cannon? A sense of relief washed over the area as a new mission was announced by the Pentagon on Tuesday, June 20, 2006. The Air Force Special Operations 16th Wing will soon occupy the base. Half the personnel expected to filter into Cannon Air Force Base over the next two years will come from outside Hurlburt Field in Florida, and half will relocate from Hurlburt.

Clovis, NM city of the plains. Located in Curry County, New Mexico. Proud home to Cannon AFB.
The city's history goes back thousands of years earlier to the "Clovis Culture." In 1932, A. W. Anderson of Clovis first discovered evidence of human occupation about 11,000 years ago at the Blackwater Draw site. Now the Blackwater Draw Museum presents evidence of the remarkable "fluted" points (a New World invention) and other stone and bone weapons. They occur in association with extinct Pleistocene age megafauna such as mammoth, ancient bison, horse and large turtles. Recovered bones of these mastodon are also on display. A state museum, it is under the direction of Eastern New Mexico University at Portales and is located 12 miles southwest of Clovis on U. S. Highway 70.

Oasis State Park, Roosevelt NM. In Eastern New Mexico close to dairies an oasis on the plains
No vanishing mirage, Oasis State Park is true to its name.
Tall cottonwoods and a shimmering pond sit among the shifting sand dunes. An abundance of birds and anglers are drawn to this watering hole, which the New Mexico State Park Division keeps stocked throughout the year.
The fishing pond may be the main attraction but with hiking trails, picnic areas, campgrounds, a ballfield, and a playground, Oasis State Park has something for everyone.

Meet your Neighbors: Jim and Robbie Payne
James (Jim) B. and Robbie Payne moved back to Clovis last year.
Both were born in Clovis, and both of their families had settled in Eastern New Mexico in the early 1900s.
From Oklahoma, some of Jim’s family members came to New Mexico by train; the others, by wagon. Jim’s grandparents had decided that the territory of New Mexico had more to offer a person who wanted to farm a little and to run a few head of cattle, so they came to Melrose on February 28, 1907. They homesteaded land one mile west and two miles north of Cottonwood Grove, west of Melrose. At that time, Jim’s Dad was three years old. Jim’s Dad, known as “Pistol” (Vernon) Payne, later graduated from Melrose. Robbie Purselley’s family came by train from Arkansas in 1909, and settled 15 miles north of Texico near Pleasant Hill. Robbie’s Granddad was a school teacher, and her Dad was a policeman—Captain C.B. “Shorty” Purselley.

Moving back to Clovis, New Mexico - Is the secret out?
I couldn’t believe it! I was returning to Clovis to live. Clovis has always had a special place in my heart, and now I’m remembering why. Is the secret out?
Clovis still has that “small town” atmosphere I left 33 years ago, with its friendly people, great schools, and many churches in which to worship. Once again, I can enjoy the mild climate, the clear sunny skies, and the wide open spaces. Unlike other parts of the country, Eastern New Mexico has no smog, floods, forest fires, landslides, earthquakes, or hurricanes. What a great place to call home!
